Raas

Raas is supposed to belong to Kutch and Suarashtra regions of India. The ras traditions are thousand of years old. In various parts of the country, Raas are danced in different manners. The main feature of Raas is dancing in a circle by men and woman, accompanied by musical instruments and keeping time either by clapping or beating two colorful sticks. The number of dancers of Raas exhibit vigorous footwork and rhythmic body movements to convey the energy of the performance to keep the audience enthralled. Raas is played with the music of dhol, a percussion instrument and shehnai, the wind instrument.

Costume
MAN: The man wear colorful Kedia, Chudidar, Turban, Koti, Kamarbandh, Colorful Cap and they wear silver ornaments like Kadu, Tavij, Kadi and Mala.

 WOMAN:  The women wear colorful embroidered Chaniya, Odhani, Kapdu and they wear silver jewellery like Long necklace, Sort necklace, Adjani, Earrings, Chudla, Zanzar, Kadu and Nuth.

Rajasthani

Rajasthani Dance is basically a community dance of the Rajputs performed by the men and the women. This promising dance consists of simple, swaying movements, however, a wonderful grace as the skirts flare slowly while the women twirl in circles, their faces covering by the veil. This traditional dance is performed during the festivals of Rajasthan.

Costume
MAN: The man wear colorful Dhoti, Kurta, Bandi, Kamarkhesh, Turban and they wear silver ornaments like Kadu, Tavij, Kadi, Colorful mala.

WOMAN: The women are dressed in colorful ghaghras with rich Rajasthani embroidery. The long cholis are designed in the traditional style of Rajasthan with long sleeves. The Odhanis are in bright color with Rajasthani embroidery. They wear golden jewellery like Long necklace, Sort necklace, Damani, Earrings, Chudla, Zanzar, Kadu and Nuth.

SAMBALPURI

Sambhalpuri dance is a group-dance from Sambhalpuri region in eastern part of India. This dance performed by the tribal people in festive mood.
Sambhalpuri dance comprises of one of the most exquisite form of aesthetic expression for both men and women. The people of rural Sambhalpuri, particularly those living in the forests, usually perform this dance in the open air on moonlit night. It was to soothe their weary nerves, tired after a day of manual work. Women also perform this dance for the well being of their brothers and family members.
With time, Sambhalpuri dance has become more diverse with innovative tunes, musical rhythms, and movement of the body.

MAN: The man wear colorful Dhoti, Bandi, Kamarkhes, Head belt with feathers, and they wear silver ornaments like Kadu, Tavij, Kadi, Colorful mala and Ghungharoo.

WOMAN: The women wear Orissa sari with embroidered border, kapdu and they wear silver jewellery like Sort necklace, Colorful mala, Earrings, Chudla, Ghungharoo, Kadu and Traditional head belt.

HUDO

Hudo is a folk game of the shepherd community played by men and women at Tarnetar which is a religious place in the state of Gujarat in India. It is also played at local fairs. The young men and women try to match their guts and strength with each other. While playing hudo they sing songs of love. There is also a tradition of selecting their life partners at the end of the game.

MAN: The man wear colorful dhoti with embroidered border, Koti, Traditional cap with colorful frill and they wear silver ornaments like Kadu, Tavij, Kadi and Colorful mala.

WOMAN:  The women wear Dark colored Jimy, Kapdu, Othani and they wear silver jewellery like Long necklace, Sort necklace, Earrings, Chudla, Kadu and Damani.

RATHVA

The rathva is a tribal dance of Chhota Udaipur region of Western part of India. The Rathva tribe performs this dance during festivals like colorful Holi and Dashera. During the festival they move from house to house inviting people to join them in the revelry. They dance to the rhythm of the sounds made by large metal balls tied around their waist. They make vigorous circular movements. The men wear crowns made of bird feathers while dancing.

Costume
MAN: The men wear Indian tie with peacock feathers on their head, Dhoti, Kamar- bandh and they wear silver ornaments like Kadu, Tavij, Kadi, Ghunghroo, Large metal ball’s belt for west and Colorful mala.

GARBA

Garba Dance is popular folk dance of Gujarat, performed by women on festive occasions. The word Garba is derived from the word “garbha-deep” meaning a lamp inside a perforated earthen pot, which symbolizes the embryonic life. In the villages, ladies place the pot with the lamp on their heads and move in circles, singing and clapping their palms or snapping their fingers, to the accompaniment of folk instruments.

The actual performance begins at night after the women finish their household work. All gather at street corners. A photograph of the goddess or a lamp is kept in the centre and around it the circle is formed. The dancing begins with slow tempo and reaches a fast tempo. The rhythm is kept by a Dholi or drummer who sits in the centre.

The women are dressed in colorful ghagras with rich Gujarati embroidery. The cholis are designed in the traditional ‘kapda’ style of Gujarat with ling sleeves embroidered with mirrors. The Odhanis are in bright color bandhanis.They wear golden jewellery like Long necklace, Sort necklace, Damani, Earrings, Chudla, Zanzar, Kadu and Nuth.

DANGI

It is a tribal dance from the district of Dang, a thickly forest area of Gujarat. Men and women dance together holding each other by the waist. The dancers also perform acrobatics. The dance is strong, filled with zest and is spontaneous.

MAN: The men wear colorful Dhoti, Bandi, Kamarkhes, Head belt with feathers, and they wear silver ornaments like Kadu, Tavij, Kadi, Colorful mala and Ghungharoo.

WOMAN: The women wear colorful dhotis and odhanis and heavy silver tribal jewellery and head ornaments.

Musical Instruments
Pungi (a tribal wind instrument), Dhol, Dholak, Harmonium, Kansi joda and Manjira.

This is a wedding dance from north Gujarat, done when the event is beginning. This dance takes its name from the handkerchief or rumal tied to the hands of the dancers. It is primarily a male dance with the women only introducing the dance with a separate piece called the ‘heench’ which takes its name from a rhythm.

Costume
MAN: The men wear short Koti or Kediya with heavy embroidery, white chudidar and mirror work caps on their heads.

WOMAN: The women are dressed in red, green and blue ghagaras with the traditional colorful waxwork on them. They wear bright yellow odhanis and silver jewellery.

Dhol, Dholak, Harmonium, kansi joda, Flute.

DHARAMPUR

The men dance this number with great gusto, performing acrobatic feats in between. As this dance is from the interior regions of Dharampur, the rural spontaneity shows in the free movements and the use of improvised percussion instruments.

Costume
The men wear colourful shirts, Dhoti with embroidered border, Kamar bandh, Traditional head belt with peacock feathers and they wear silver ornaments like Kadu, Tavij, Kadi, and Ghungharoo and Colorful mala.

Musical Instruments
Dhol, Dholak, Harmonium, Kansi joda and Ghughra.

KALBELIA

The kalbelia is a dance of the snake-charmer, ‘sapera’ tribe of Rajasthan state; the nomadic tribe sings and dances as they move through the dessert sands.

Costume
The women wear black skirts and shirts and bead jewellery and cover their head with a black odhanis.

Musical Instruments
Raawanhatha (a string instrument), Dhol, Dholak, Harmonium, kansi-joda.

Bhangda

The Bhangra dance is extremely popular in Punjab State. Dance play by the men, it is an extremely vigorous dance interspersed with acrobatic movements. It is danced in celebration of the Harvest season.

Costume
The men wear colorful Lungi, Kurta, Kamar bandh and koti with matching turbans.
